ADVICE FOR A PILGRIM

pilgrim

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And the rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May you be held in the palm of God’s hand.
Old Irish Blessing

Thirdly, by its very nature, since it is a journey away from the familiar toward the unfamiliar, the pilgrimage is an adventure.  Yet the pilgrim must be on guard lest the adventure of the pilgrimage steal his attention away from the “inner-venture”, the inner journey of the Spirit that every person in this world is making towards God.  Thus it is necessary that the goals of the journey be always kept in mind so that the temptation to turn the vocation of a pilgrim into the vacation of the pilgrim is realistically faced.  A good pilgrimage allows for prayerful attention – to be aware of the movements of the “inner-venture.” (Hays, Edward, Pray All Ways, 2007 p. 75)

Word of God: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:21

Reflection: What is the difference between the “vocation of the pilgrim” and the “vacation of the pilgrim”?

Secondly, the pilgrim leaves home, saying goodbye to loved ones and to the familiar, to travel to the unfamiliar, the unknown.  This is never easy since we fear the unknown and tend to surround ourselves with all sorts of things that tell us that we are not really far from home.  Yet this journey into the unknown can be the very cause of our placing our trust in God. (Hays, Edward, Pray All Ways, 2007 p. 74)

Word of God:  Do not let your hearts be troubled.

Trust in God; trust also in me.  John 14: 1

Reflection:  What or who do I need to say goodbye to in order to live a pilgrim’s journey?

May the road rise to meet you

May you be held in the palm of God’s hand.

The first rule for the pilgrim is to travel simply.  The pilgrimage should help in discerning that which is essential in our lives and that which is not.  We should take with us only those possessions we really need, and experience teaches us what sort of possessions tend to become a burden: those things we are forced to carry only to protect.  The journey can help us to learn how to live more simply and single-mindedly – what things to value and what things to regard lightly.  (Hays, Edward, Pray All Ways, 2007 p. 74)

Word of God: These were his instructions:

“Take nothing for the journey except a staff

- no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.” Mark 6:8

Reflection: What does it mean for me to “travel simply”?
